Using Channels
How you use channels depends on the type of channels you created:
- If you created URL channels, you’re done. Google automatically tracks AdSense revenue based on the URL displayed when the ad was clicked.
- If you created custom channels, you need to generate (or regenerate) ad code with the channel defined.
To generate the ad code, follow these steps:
- In your AdSense account, click the AdSense Setup tab.
- Click the Products link.
- Follow the onscreen prompts to generate your AdSense ad code. Eventually,
you’ll see a window prompting you to choose up to five custom channels to
associate with this ad. Click the Add link beside a channel name to add it to
the list on the right (see Figure 9). Repeat this process for each channel you
want to add. Normally, I add only one channel to an ad type, but that’s
because I haven’t come up with a good reason to add more than one. Do
whatever you need to do.

- Follow the onscreen prompts to finish generating the AdSense code.
- Copy the ad code and it into your blog or web page’s source code as usual. In my example, I would use the wick-single code in the blog template that displays just a single blog post. Then, when someone clicked an ad on a single blog post page, it would be recorded for that custom channel. If I did the same for category pages and my home page, I could see which pages were most effective in earning revenue.
