Using the iPod's Backlight
The Backlight lights up the iPod's screen so you can see it in dark conditions or at other times when you might have trouble reading it. You can configure it to turn off automatically after a specific period of time, and you can turn the Backlight on or off manually.
Configuring the Backlight
You can configure the iPod to turn its Backlight on briefly each time you press a button. This is useful because you can always see what you are doing no matter what the lighting conditions may be. You can also have the Backlight on at all times, but I don't recommend that option because of the drain on the iPod's battery.
You can configure your iPod's Backlight settings by performing the following steps:
- Select Main menu, Settings. You'll see the Settings screen.
- Select Backlight Timer. You'll see the Backlight menu (see Figure 3.10).
Figure 3.10 You use the Backlight menu to configure your iPod's Backlight.
- If you want the Backlight to come on each time you press a control, choose the amount of time you want it to remain on after you stop touching a control. Your options are 2, 5, 10, 15, or 20 seconds.
- If you want the Backlight to come on only when you manually activate it, select Off.
- If you want the Backlight on all the time, select Always On. Again, I don't recommend this option because it will drain your battery more quickly.
- Press Menu twice to move back to the Main menu.
Turning On the Backlight
The iPod has a Backlight command that you can use to turn it on or off manually. This command is not displayed on the Main menu by default. If you want to use it, add it to the Main menu by doing the following:
- Select Main menu, Settings. You'll see the Settings screen.
- Select Main menu. You'll see the Main Menu screen on which you can configure the options on the Main menu. (You'll learn about this in more detail in Chapter 12.)
- Scroll down to and highlight Backlight and press the Select button. You'll see On listed next to that option. This indicates that the command is now on the Main menu.
- Press Menu twice to move back to the Main menu.
When you move back to the Main menu, you'll see it now has the Backlight command. (Remember that you can tell it is a command because it doesn't have an arrow along the right edge of the screen.)
To turn on the Backlight, move to the Main menu, select Backlight, and click the Select button. The Backlight will come on, and your iPod's world will be a lot brighter.
After the current Backlight time passes, the Backlight will turn off automatically. Or, choose the command again to manually turn the Backlight off.
