NetInfo Under Mac OS X Server
Apple has actively discouraged the use of shared NetInfo domains—and with good reason. NetInfo is proprietary to Mac OS X, which makes it almost unusable in a mixed-platform environment. It also does not offer the replication or scalability benefits that are part of OpenLDAP. OpenLDAP is also open source, which provides greater resources for administrators wanting to make changes. The Apple schema for OpenLDAP also supports greater ease of modification for custom and multiplatform environments. However, NetInfo still exists under Mac OS X Server in two different ways.
