Are You Being Taken For A Ride?

As I was writing this article, I found that there are a lot of ways that cell phone companies are getting you to part with your hard earned dollars—all for something they call "personalization."

Closely following the popularity of personalized ringtones are personalized key tones. That's right, now when you press a button on your phone, it can emit a little squeak that is individual to you. Again, you can buy these for the modest price of around $2.

But don't stop there! Don't like the picture or wallpaper on your cell phone? Why not change it? You can scour through the hundreds of thousands of pictures you can buy. Again, it is all super cheap: at only a buck or two for each one. But, you need several pictures, don't you, to suit your changing mood?

What I can't figure out is this: there are a lot of well-documented ways to change the many hundreds of sounds and images on your computer for free. Why do we continue to pay the cell phone companies?
