ODC and Open Standards
The days of single-vendor lock-in are nearly a thing of the past. IBM realizes that the ODC project requires a cross-industry effort, not least in the number of standards that are required: J2EE/J2SE/J2ME, XML, HTTP, UDDI, WSDL, SOAP, CIM, and so on. In some industries with a substantial legacy content, these technologies will be used to repackage and extend the lifecycle of existing systems in an ODC context. Other industries will build ODC systems from the ground up.
Another important part of ODC is the need for the loose coupling associated with service-oriented architecture (SOA). ODC will leverage these standard technologies as it progresses.
