Making Money with Your Podcast
The news content for a podcast is typically free. There are two clear avenues of earning money from a podcast show: advertising and subscriptions.
You may want to subsidize your free content with advertising for the podcast during the show. For instance, the #1 Internet radio show is Virgin Radio out of London, England, which has been podcasting its early morning show with Pete & Geoff since March 2005. When you listen to the podcast, the advertising that normally appears during the show has been cut. Instead, a commercial space for a show sponsor is added to the beginning of the show. As the show can be listened to anytime, anywhere, the advertising gains greater weight over traditional advertising. A listener may want to listen to a specialty show repeatedly—each time he listens, he hears the advertising.
Another way to make money through podcasting is to open the technology to a subscription model. If you've downloaded the latest version of iTunes, you can see that Apple has included a subscription model. I have no doubt that before the end of the 2005 people will be asked to pay for specific podcasts, such as the show aired by Newsweek.
