Control Your Music
When it comes to music, the most important thing is control. Many people have large collections of MP3s and other music formats on their computers. A recent survey from Forrester indicated that the average user has more than 1,000 songs, and many users have song lists in excess of 5,000 individual songs (all legal, right?). When you have such a massive song list, you need to be able to control the music. iTunes gives you a number of ways in which you can do this.
The first and most important way iTunes gives you easy access to and control over your music is through the interface, as shown in Figure 1. Apple fully understands the functionality of the iTunes interface and has even patented the design. You will see that many tools and features in the iTunes interface are similar to those in Windows Media Player, MusicMatch, and WinAmp.
