What's Not in the Infoset?
Appendix D of the XML Information Set Recommendation presents a nonexhaustive list of about twenty items not within scope (http://www.w3.org/TR/xml-infoset/#omitted). A sampling of the list is illustrative of what the Infoset does not attempt to define.
DTD content models
DTD attribute order and grouping
DTD comments
Whether characters are represented by character references or not (e.g., < )
White space in specific contexts
White space with end tags and start tags (excepting significant white space contained within attribute values)
End-of-line character
Single vs. double quotes around attribute values
Default values of attributes declared in the DTD
Whether declarations are from the internal or external subset
Empty element format (e.g., <empty/> vs. <empty></empty>)
Keep this list in mind as we discuss Canonical XML shortly. Although the XML Information Set specification does not refer to Canonical XML, there is mention of Infoset in the Canonical XML specification.
