Openness
PortalBuilder is based on J2EE and has some of the best cross-platform support available (Intranet Journal article). It provides interoperability with a wide variety of directory servers (various LDAPs as well as Active Directory), operating systems (NT 4/5; Windows 2000; Solaris 2.6, 2.7, and 2.8; and HP/UX 11), databases (Oracle, SQL Server, and so on), and web/application servers. However, it's very sensitive to changes in the different versions of supporting software, so it's advisable to check the exact versions of LDAP, JDK, and web servers to be used. Support of open standards such as XML, WSDL, SOAP, and UDDI adds further versatility.
PortalBuilder integrates with Yahoo! Companion (Enterprise Edition) and with the nearly 100 My Yahoo! Enterprise Edition modules, including Headline News, Weather, Yahoo! Search, etc. There are also 2000+ Yahoo! content sources from which to select. Access to all this ready-made content is a major plus for PortalBuilder. However, much of this content is also available via other e-portal software, such as BEA WebLogic.
PortalBuilder is also compatible with TIBCO products such as all the TIBCO PortalPacks, TIBCO AlertServer, and the TIBCO ActiveEnterprise product suite. It can also be integrated with other products, such as Netegrity SiteMinder.
Plumtree Corporate Portal's "gadget" architecture allows it to interoperate with software running on a wide range of architectures. Gadgets can be run on such platforms as UNIX or Windows 2000 and developed in several different languages (Perl, VBScript, Java) with the help of Plumtree's Gadget Development Kit.
