Logging In to a Server
The first administrator to log in to SMC should set up at least one account with the rights of Primary Administrator. See "Getting Started with User Tools" on page 78 for more information about Primary Administrator rights and for instructions on how to assign Primary Administrator rights.
When you click on a tool in the Console, a Log In window, shown in Figure 21, is displayed in these circumstances:
The first time you load a tool during a session.
When the selected tool is on a different server than previous loaded tools and if your Tool Loading preferences are set to prompt for credentials for each server.
When the selected tool is on a different server than previously loaded tools, your Tool Loading preferences are set to prompt for initial credentials for each server, and you are not authorized to access this server with the same credentials.

You are asked to log in with a user ID and password only when no roles have been assigned to you and the advanced login preference is not set.
NOTE
A role is an account with all the attributes of a user account, including a name, user ID (UID), password, and home directory. A role also has a specific set of administrative rights. See Chapter 9, "Rights," and Chapter 10, "Administrative Roles," for information about rights and roles.
When roles are assigned to you, you are asked to log in with both a user ID and password and a role login and password.
When roles are assigned to you and the advanced login preference is set, the Log In window includes both user and role login fields. When the advanced login preference is not set, the first Log In window asks for a user ID and password and the second Log In window asks for a role name and role password, as shown in Figure 22.
