Introduction
My four-part series on mobile application development for InformIT focused on mobile databases that run on a wide variety of mobile computing platforms. Continuing with that theme, I'm launching another four-part series, this time focusing on Windows CE application development, specifically Windows CE application development with Microsoft tools. In this article, I'll introduce you to the CE platform itself along with the preferred tools of today (Microsoft's eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0) and tomorrow (the .NET Compact Framework). Future articles in this series will step you through the application development process with three powerful Microsoft tools: eMbedded Visual Basic, eMbedded Visual C++, and SQL Server for Windows CE. Before diving into any more specifics, however, allow me to back up a few steps and present the Windows CE platform in its entirety, just to be sure that we're all on the same page.
