What Is Content Management?
In general, content management (CM) can be described as a way of controlling the entire lifecycle of content, from creation through publication through expiration. Content management systems provides business users with direct control of their web presence, while at the same time giving site designers and developers the ability to precisely control look, feel, and functionality. Further, CM solutions allow all parties involved to repurpose content; that is, CM solutions allow content contributors to enter content once and reuse it multiple times.
As this is a pretty broad definition, and this article is about choosing a solution, you should refer to my previous article, "Managing Web Content with a Content Management System," for more information on the topic of content management.
"Okay, I need a content management system to improve the manageability of my web sites," you say, "but which one do I choose?" Good questionone worth asking.
