Diagram Your Cluster Configuration
Once you have compiled all the data you need, it is time to diagram your cluster configuration. This is where you will get the greatest visual picture of your project. Many engineers today overlook the need for adequate documentation to their detriment. Building a cluster server system is a complex task that should be documented and diagramed prior to ordering the first piece of hardware.
There are many diagramming software programs on the market that will assist you with your diagram. The type of software is not as important as the accuracy of your diagram. Here are some of the things you should include in your diagram:
All servers and their connectivity to each other
All network hardware that will be implemented
IP subnetting design, including IP addresses for your servers, cluster resources, virtual servers, routers, firewalls, and other devices
Server names
Applications to be used on the cluster
Make sure to forward your network diagram to all those individuals in your company that are responsible for IT and facility services. Electrical power requirements, space requirements, UPS requirements, Air Conditioning requirements, etc. should all be a part of your planning.
