Using Foursquare to Enhance Your Travel Choices

Foursquare has retooled to become a force in the Internet search and research business. It offers a vast number of well-researched places to eat, drink, and visit while you are traveling. Additionally, there are many reviews that provide insight from other travelers. The format is easy to use and visually stunning.

In the App Store, search for the Foursquare app. Tap Get, and then tap Install to load the app. Tap Open to start using Foursquare.

When you open Foursquare the first time, it asks permission to use your current location. Tap OK to allow, or tap Don’t Allow if you prefer not to let the app know your location. Foursquare is able to offer you more relevant results if you allow the Location setting.
Next, Foursquare asks permission to turn on notifications. Tap OK to allow the app to send you an email whenever someone you know makes a post. Tap Not Now if you prefer not to be notified.

Location Settings

If you choose not to allow Foursquare to know your location, you can always go to the Settings app and allow it later. It can be helpful to allow this if you are in an unfamiliar place trying to find local venues. Tap the Settings icon on your home screen. Tap Privacy on the left side of the screen. Tap Location Services at the top of the right side. Swipe up from the bottom of the screen until you see Foursquare, and then tap the switch to turn on Location Services for that app. You can turn it off later if you don’t want the app to always know your location.
Along the top of the main Foursquare screen, you see several options from top picks to coffee to shopping, and many more. Slide the bar to the left to see all categories.
Swipe up from the bottom to see categories including Trending this month, Recommended by experts, Best restaurants in the area, and more. For the purpose of this example, let’s look at the restaurant Iron Roost.

At the bottom of the screen, swipe up to see several impressive photos of the food at the Iron Roost.
Next, tap the middle area with the map for more information about the restaurant.

Tap the arrow at the top left to return to the details.
