Required Software
The following software list should be installed on each server running Exchange 2000:
Windows 2000 Server, Windows 2000 Advanced Server, or Windows 2000 Data Center Server. This server should be a member server of a Windows 2000 domain and must be part of an Active Directory domain.
You must have a Domain Name Service (DNS) running in your domain.
All servers that you install Instant Messaging Service on must be members of the same domain.
Instant Messaging Service uses the IIS logging and HTTP services.
Internet Information Services (IIS) is installed with Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) should be installed.
The Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP) should be installed to provide Exchange 2000 Server the capability to access public folders on NNTP hosts.
NOTE
The Mdbdata folder (\\Exchsrvr\Mdbdata) must be empty for a successful installation; an unsuccessful installation may leave some files in this folder. To avoid unsuccessful installation, delete all those files before starting Setup again.
Microsoft Exchange Messaging and Collaboration Services must be installed on at least one server in the organization, and it is not required to be on every server.
