Install and Use the Android Device Manager (ADM)
The Android Device Manager (ADM for short) locates your Tab 4 or another Android device in case you lose it. ADM enables you to find the device quickly and lock out access to the device so that your data is less likely to be compromised. ADM isn’t installed on the Tab 4 by default—you have to download it from the Google Play Store.
Start by tapping the Play Store icon on the Home screen. Within the Play Store screen, tap the Search icon 0n the menu bar at the top of the screen. Then tap Android Device Manager (the entry with the green and white icon to the left of the name) in the list, as shown in Figure 5.
Figure 5. The Android Device Manager entry appears second from the top in the list.
Tap the Install button on the Android Device Manager app description screen. Within the App Permissions window that appears, tap Accept. After the Tab 4 installs the ADM app, tap Open on the app description screen. On the Welcome screen that appears (see Figure 6), tap the Accept button.
Figure 6. The Accept button appears in the bottom-right corner of the Welcome screen.
Next, type your password by tapping the Password field in the Android Device Manager screen and then typing the password. When you finish typing the password, tap the Done key on the keyboard. The Device Manager screen appears, as shown in Figure 7; the current location of another Galaxy Tab device is indicated by the blue dot on the map.
Figure 7. The blue dot where ADM has found a Tab device appears in the center of the screen.
In this example, ADM has found my Galaxy Tab S, which in this example has the device model name in the window (Samsung SM-T700). The device window appears above the blue dot that tells you the name of the device and when it was located. Three task buttons appear at the bottom of the window, from left to right:
- Ring: Causes the Android device to ring at full volume for 5 minutes, so if your device is nearby, you can hear where the device is. When you find the device, you can turn off the ringing by pressing the Power button.
- Lock: Enables you to lock your Android device with a new password that must not be your existing Google account password. After you type your new password, you need to type your password again to confirm it. You can also type a recovery message that appears on your Lock screen in case you want someone to know what to do when that person finds your wayward Android device.
- Erase: The Tab 4 erases all apps, media, settings, and user data from the device. If the device is off when you send the command to erase the Tab S, the device starts deleting data as soon as someone powers up the Tab S.
If you want to find another Android device such as a smartphone that runs Android, tap the device model name in the window, and then select the name of the device in the drop-down list, as shown in Figure 8.
