Getting More from the Play Books App on the Galaxy Tab 4
In autumn 2014, Google updated its Play Books app for Android devices, including the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4. These new features include a new Reading Aids screen that helps you navigate the book and an updated pop-up editing menu. The latter makes it easier to highlight information, translate a highlighted word or passage, copy highlighted text, and add a note. These new changes are in addition to minor tweaks to the app.
The original information appeared in Chapter 13 of My Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, and the app changes update information appears in the “Use Reading Aids” section on page 296 through the “Adding a Note” section on page 303. Also, this article presumes you have already downloaded and opened a book in the main reading screen, as discussed in pages 290–296 of My Samsung Galaxy Tab 4.
View a Definition
Here’s how to view a definition of a word you may not be familiar with, so you can understand what the book author is saying.
- Tap and hold your finger on a word in the book. Blue handles appear on either side of the word.
A dictionary definition appears at the bottom of the screen, as shown in Figure 1.
Figure 1 The dictionary definition box contains the root word, the phonetic pronunciation of the word, and the definitions.
- If there is more than one definition, or if you want to download the dictionary to your Tab 4, hold your finger on the dictionary definition box and then swipe upward.
The entire dictionary definition for the word appears in the tile at the top of the screen, as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2 Three definitions for the word circumstance appear in the tile at the top of the screen.
- In the Download Dictionary tile, tap Download to download the dictionary to the Tab 4. The dictionary takes up 58MB of space on your Tab 4. After you download the dictionary, the Download Dictionary tile disappears.
- When you finish viewing the entire definition, tap the Back touch button.
The highlighted word on the page reappears and the dictionary definition box appears at the bottom of the screen (refer to Figure 1). You can close the dictionary definition box and deselect the word by tapping elsewhere on the book page.
