Samsung, Google, and other app makers haven’t stood still in developing their apps for newer versions of the Android operating system. That goes for Android 4.4, or KitKat; and when you update the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 to KitKat, you also update a number of apps that run more efficiently on Android 4.4. Of these, four apps stand out as ones you’ll likely use most often; in this article, I’ll give you a quick primer about how to use these apps in KitKat.
Samsung GALAXY Apps
Samsung has updated its Tab 3 apps catalog app and given it a new name: GALAXY Apps. Open GALAXY Apps on the main Home screen by tapping the GALAXY Apps icon. A page of featured apps appears, as shown in Figure 1.

Scroll up and down the page to review groups of apps as well as individual apps. You can view more apps in a group by tapping See More.
Tap the Category icon at the right side of the blue menu bar. In the category list that appears, swipe up and down the category list if necessary to view all the categories, and then tap a category to browse the list of results for that category.
In Figure 2, the Tools category is highlighted in the category list on the left side of the screen; the list of apps within the category appears on the right side of the screen.

You can swipe up and down the list of apps on the right side of the screen. Above the list, you can filter the app list by tapping one of the filter names:
- Paid for only apps you pay for
- Free to list all apps that are free to download
- New for the newest apps in the category
You can view all apps in the category again by tapping the All filter name.
If you’d rather search for a specific app without searching in categories, tap the Search icon at the right side of the blue menu bar that you can see in Figure 2. Then start typing the name of the app you’re looking for in the Search field.
App names that may match your search term appear in the Search list below the field, as shown in Figure 3.

Keep typing to refine your search. If you see your desired app in the Search list, tap the app name in the list. The Results page appears with a list of apps that most closely match the app you’re looking for. At the top of the Results page list, you’ll see the name of the app you tapped in the Search list. In this example, the first app in the list is Fraction Calculator Plus Free, so tap that app name in the list to get more information about the app.
The Details screen appears, as shown in Figure 4. Because the app is free, you can install the app by tapping the Install button on the screen.

After you tap the Install button, the App Permissions window appears and tells you that the app needs your permission to use full network access. Begin installation by tapping Accept and Download in the window. After you install the app, open the app by tapping the Open button in the Details screen.
