How to Initiate the iOS Update Process
When you’re ready to update your iOS mobile device that’s running iOS 7.0 or later to the latest version of iOS 8, make sure your device is connected to the Internet via a Wi-Fi connection and then launch Settings. From the main Settings menu, tap on the General option.
Next, tap on the Software Update option. If a new version of the operating system is available, a message will appear within the Software Update screen. Tap on the Download and Install option, and then follow the on-screen prompts.
It will take anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes for your mobile device to download the iOS update and install it onto your device. Once the necessary files are downloaded, when the Software Update window appears, tap on the Install button. When the process is completed, you will be returned to the Lock screen and your device should function normally, with all of your apps, data, and settings remaining intact.
