Voice Recognition
By default, voice control options for your Tab 4 are turned on and the Google Voice app manages voice input. You can turn on Google Voice settings on and off, change the voice recognizer between Google and the Samsung voice recognizer, and change Google voice recognition settings within the Settings screen.
Access voice input settings by tapping the Apps icon on the home screen and then tap Settings in the Apps menu. Next, tap Controls in the blue menu bar at the top of the Settings screen. The Language and Input settings list appears as shown in Figure 7.

Turn off Google voice input by tapping the checkbox to the left of the Google Voice option in the list. If you would rather keep Google Voice input on but view and/or change settings, tap the Settings icon (it looks like a cogwheel) to the right of the Google Voice option. The Google Voice settings screen appears as shown in Figure 8.
Figure 8. The Google Voice screen allows you to view and change Voice app settings.
Within this settings screen, you can view and/or change the following options:
- Languages: Select your desired language for speech input and output by tapping this option and then selecting the language from the list. The default language is English (US).
- Speech Output: By default, speech output is on so you can hear output from your Tab 4. Tap this option if you want the Tab 4 to speak output when you’re not using the Tab 4 using your hands or turn off Speech Output entirely.
- “Ok Google” Detection: When you’re using the Google Search app, you can activate the app using your voice by saying, “OK Google”. You can activate the Google Search app from any screen by tapping this option and then tapping From Any Screen in the “Ok Google” Detection screen. When you turn on voice search from any screen for the first time, you’ll be asked to agree to Google’s terms and conditions and then set up Google Voice to say “Ok Google” from any screen.
- Offline Speech Recognition: Download languages you can use for speech recognition when the Tab 4 isn’t connected to the Internet.
- Block Offensive Words: Whenever you have voice results with offensive terms such as profanity, Google Voice doesn’t speak these words. If you want to listen to all words, tap the checkbox to the right of this option.
- Audio History: This feature is required for you to say “Ok Google” from any screen to start a voice search. If you have enabled the capability to say “Ok Google” from any screen, the slider button to the right of this option is On automatically. If you haven’t enabled “Ok Google” capability, the slider button is Off; when you turn on the button by sliding the button from the left (Off) to right (On) you’ll be asked to agree to Google’s terms and conditions.
- Manage Audio History: Shows the history of your use of “Ok Google” to perform Google searches in your preferred web browser.
- Bluetooth Headset: Tap this option if you want to use a Bluetooth headset to communicate with your Tab 4 through the Google Voice app.
Return to the Settings screen by tapping the left arrow button in the blue menu bar at the top of the Google Voice screen.
Within the Speech section of the Language and Input settings list, the Voice Recognizer option reflects that Google Voice is the default app for recognizing your voice on the Tab 4. You can change this option by tapping Voice Recognizer in the list. You can change the app within the Voice Recognizer window shown in Figure 9.
Figure 9. If you don’t want to change the voice recognition app, tap Cancel in the window.
Change the voice recognizer to the Samsung app by tapping the button to the right of the Samsung Powered by Vlingo option in the window. Unfortunately, there aren’t any settings for the Samsung voice recognition app, but as this is an app produced by Vlingo you can get more information about the app and how it works from the Vlingo website (http://www.vlingo.com).
Now that you know how to change your motion and voice settings, experiment with using these settings to interact with the Tab 4 using your voice. If you find these features useful you can keep them, but you can always turn off these settings if you prefer to use your fingers to control your Tab 4 instead.
