Installing, Configuring, Managing, Monitoring, and Troubleshooting WINS in a Windows 2000 Network Infrastructure
In a pure Windows 2000 environment, we don't need or want WINS. However, because many networks are still using a mixture of NT 4.0 Workstation and 4.0 Server operating systems, WINS is hanging around. Remember that WINS is used to resolve NetBIOS names to IP addresses.
You should know how to install a WINS server; and configure and troubleshoot the server. If you have a couple of WINS servers to experiment with, create push/pull replication partnersknow the attributes of each. Finally, know which operating systems can and can't use WINS, and when it's best to implement a WINS proxy agent.
NOTE
Study Hint: know how to back up and restore the WINS database.
