Independent Comparisons/Reviews
As stated in my last article, when comparing technologies on other criteria such as performance, security, availability, and so forth, it's useful to take independent benchmarks and comparisons into account when choosing the correct software for an e-business applications architecture.
For example, when evaluating content-management systems, personalization systems, and portal systems for a client (and having never used any of the software myself), I had to determine whether each product could meet my client's needs. Obviously, the vendors' information was an insufficient basis on which to make a recommendation. Using feedback on newsgroups from those who had used the systems, coupled with independent reviews/tests, I managed to attain some degree of certainty that the products I eventually recommended could meet the requirements of my client within budget and time scales.
