iCloud: Many Uses, One Storage Space
As you’ve discovered in this chapter, iCloud is much more than just a typical cloud-based file-sharing service. However, after you set up your free iCloud account, you can choose which of iCloud’s features and functions you want to utilize from within Settings on each of your device(s).
You are not required to use all of iCloud’s various features. You can turn on only those features you believe are beneficial to you, based on how you typically use your iPhone and/or iPad, and what content, data, and information you want to synchronize or back up to your iCloud account.
TIP
If you’re like most people and wind up storing a lot of content, data, and files on your iPhone and iPad, for example, and you want to use the iCloud Backup feature with each of your iOS devices, you might need to increase your iCloud online storage space allocation (which means incurring an annual fee).
At the top of the main Storage & Backup screen within Settings, the amount of total online storage space you have available on iCloud is displayed next to the Total Storage heading (refer to Figure 6.8). Below that, the available online storage is listed.

To see how your iCloud online storage is being utilized, tap on the Manage Storage option that’s also listed under the Storage heading on the Storage & Backup menu screen. If your online storage allocation is almost filled (or becomes filled), tap on the Buy More Storage option to immediately increase the amount of available online storage space you have available.
