Benefits of BAM
As discussed in previous articles, one of the most compelling benefits of BAM is the ability to set thresholds and then be alerted if a threshold is exceeded or fallen under. These capabilities have existed for years with system-level tools, which allow an organization to monitor networks, servers, etc. Examples of these products include HP's OpenView and Computer Associates' Unicenter. However, these systems are used by the IT staff, and the results are rarely expressed in a manner useful to the business staff. For example, OpenView monitors events such as disk quota usage, network traffic, server outage, and other system-level events. A businessperson is more interested in whether the server outage will delay a large shipment to a key customer, thus resulting in customer dissatisfactionand, in some cases, even a financial penalty. (For example, a service-level agreement may dictate that orders arrive by a particular time to avoid a financial penalty.)
