Using Facebook Groups
Once you create a Group, you can then post updates and files to the Group page. Only Friends you’ve added to the Group will see the posts and files you’ve made.
To view a Group, go to your Home page and look for a Groups section (not labeled) in the sidebar. As you can see in the figure below, all the Groups you’ve created are listed here; if you have more Groups than can be displayed in the sidebar, click the See All link to view them all. Click a Group name to view that Group’s page.
Figure 2 View all your Groups in the Home page sidebar.
As you can see below, a Group page looks a little like a normal Facebook page, except without the tabs. Since a Group is primarily a means of outgoing communication, there’s nothing stored there. Instead, you make posts and upload photos and other files, all from this page.
Figure 3 A typical Facebook Group page.
- To post a status update that gets sent to all the members of a Group, click the Post link in the Share section near the top of the page. This displays the normal posting box; enter your message then click the Share button. Members of your Group will receive notification of this new post.
- To share a photo, video, or other file, click the appropriate icon in the Share section. You can then upload the file you want to share, then click the Share button. Members of your Group will receive notification of this new file.
- To chat with members of the Group, click the Chat with Group link. This opens a chat (instant message) window. Group members who are online are listed here; click a name to begin a chat session.
- You can use note-like documents to collaborate with Group members. To create what Facebook calls a “doc,” click the Doc button in the Share section; when prompted, enter the documents’ name and then type your note. Docs you’ve created are listed in the Docs section in the right hand sidebar.
- To add more members to your Group, click the add Friends to Group link. This displays a new dialog box; enter the names of Friends you want to add, then click the Add button.
As you can see, it’s all pretty easy to do. Just remember that this new type of Facebook Group is really just a way to organize your Friends list into smaller groups, and then send posts and files only to those people. It definitely should help you better segment your Facebook activity!
