Making Calls Using Whistle
Native iPad apps that allow you to make VoIP calls are coming out. Currently, the most popular of these is Whistle. Whistle is free to download and, as with Skype, very easy to set up. All you need is to create a user ID and password, and furnish an email address. With Whistle, you can call anywhere in North America for free and, as with Skype, you can make international calls for a very low rate.
Whistle has a feature that is missing from Skype: conference calling. With a Whistle VoIP call in session, you can call in a second person. This is great for three-way calls.
There is a catch to the free service, however: You have to listen to a 20-second audio commercial before each call. This can get irritating very quickly. You can pay to not have the commercials, but that does take away some of the promise of a free VoIP service.
