Privacy is a nagging concern for most Facebook users, especially with each new retooling of the website. The most recent changes to the site have garnered a lot of news media attention regarding the safety of personal information. As growing numbers of people join this popular social network, it’s critically important to make sure you take the necessary steps to keep your information safe.

Finding your way to all the vital safety settings isn't always easy or intuitive. Even if your family shares Facebook accounts on one computer, you'll need to adjust the privacy settings for each account. Thankfully, there are several things you can do to limit your private details from being broadcast to the Internet at large, yet still allow you to enjoy all the features that Facebook offers. Here’s a checklist you can go through to customize your account.

1. Find and Use the Facebook Privacy Settings

First and foremost: Know where to find the Facebook privacy settings. Facebook seems to undergo a lot of frequent interface changes, and this includes the various options for controlling profile information. You can find most of the privacy settings by going through the Account menu located at the top of every Facebook page. Simply click Account and then click Privacy Settings. This opens the Choose Your Privacy Settings page, shown in Figure 1.

Be sure to check out all the links on this page, and view each option to set them the way you want. The default settings are always set to their widest availability, which means your information is open to everyone on the Internet. If you don't want your information made completely public, then it's up to you to limit it to your circle of friends.

Service Announcements

On rare occasions it is necessary to send out a strictly service related announcement. For instance, if our service is temporarily suspended for maintenance we might send users an email. Generally, users may not opt-out of these communications, though they can deactivate their account information. However, these communications are not promotional in nature.

Other Collection and Use of Information


Application and System Logs

Pearson automatically collects log data to help ensure the delivery, availability and security of this site. Correcting/Updating Personal Information


If a user's personally identifiable information changes (such as your postal address or email address), we provide a way to correct or update that user's personal data provided to us. This can be done on the Account page. If a user no longer desires our service and desires to delete his or her account, please contact us at customer-service@informit.com and we will process the deletion of a user's account.

Choice/Opt-out
