Addressing Privacy Concerns
Since announcing Docs in April in conjunction with Facebook, we've had to help explain privacy concerns raised about Facebook in general, and more specifically about Facebook's new instant personalization capability.
Our service, docs.com, assigns user permissions to each document on the site. Document owners can invite their friends to view or edit their doc. When a document owner grants these rights, she can choose to have docs.com publish Facebook notifications in two ways: by direct message to her Facebook friends' inbox or by posting it to her own Facebook News Feed.
When her friends click these links and attempt to view the document, docs.com uses Facebook authentication data to ensure they've been granted access.
The service does utilize Facebook's new instant personalization to enable smooth transitions when an individual navigates from Facebook to docs.com. With this capability, docs.com can seamlessly verify access permissions, increasing the likelihood that friends who've been invited to view or edit a document actually do so.
