Conclusion
I’ve highlighted some very common do’s and don’ts (which I call techniques and violations, respectively) that are easily actionable or avoidable for anyone involved in the design of a user interface—not just usability professionals. Remember that the goal in applying a technique is to make the perception of an actual duration shorter than it really is, or to make users more tolerant of an unavoidable duration. Similarly, violations should be corrected or prevented. Left unattended, they cause actual durations to be overestimated or reduce tolerance, making users less patient and forgiving of delays and system latencies.
