Setting Tab Stops
You can also use tabs in text blocks, as shown in Figure 3.27.
Figure 3.27 Using tabs.
You can see the various types of tabs available in Visio in Figure 3.27. These tabs appear as icons in the tab toolbar, shown at the top of the text block.
Moving from left to right, the first tab stop, which looks like an upside-down T, is a center tab. As you can see, the text in the Product column, below the text ruler, is indeed centered.
The next tab stop, looking like an L, is a left-aligned tab—and you can see that the text in the column below this tab, the Name column, is indeed left-aligned.
The next tab stop, which looks like a backward L, is a right-aligned tab stop, and you can see that the text in the column below the tab stop is right-aligned.
The final tab stop in the text ruler, which looks like an upside-down T with a dot, is a decimal-point alignment tab stop. The text in the column below it is aligned on the decimal point.
How do you create these tab stops? Follow these steps:
- Click the Text tool on the Standard toolbar.
- Click the shape whose text you want to edit. Visio displays the text block as selected.
- Right-click the text block and select the Text Ruler item. Visio displays the text ruler at the top of the text block.
- Click the button that displays the tab type at the left in the Text Ruler until the type of tab you want appears. Visio cycles through the various tab types as you click the button, whose caption changes to match.
- Click the text ruler at the location where you want the new tab. Visio displays the new tab in the text ruler.
- Repeat the preceding steps to add other tabs to the text ruler.
And that's it—you've created the tabs you want. To delete them, simply drag them off the ruler.
Want more precise control over your tab stops, such as their exact position? Use the Tabs tab in the Text dialog. Here's how:
- Click the Text tool on the Standard toolbar.
- Click the shape whose text you want to edit. Visio displays the text block as selected.
- Select Format > Text or right-click the text block and select Format Text. Visio displays the Text dialog, shown in Figure 3.28.
Figure 3.28 Using the Tabs tab of the Text dialog.

- To add a tab precisely, click Add. Visio creates a new tab stop.
- Enter a measurement in the Tab Stop Position box.
- Select an alignment in the Alignment area. Select from Left, Right, Center, and Decimal.
- Repeat the preceding steps to add more tabs.
- Click OK to close the Text dialog.
That lets you set your tabs with great precision.
