Compiling your own kernel isn't all that hard, but it does require attention to detail and a good knowledge of your hardware. The available configuration choices can be overwhelming to the novice. Don't be discouraged if your first attempt at compiling a kernel doesn't come out exactly as you planned. Few people get everything exactly right the first time. But if you're willing to learn from your mistakes, you'll gain an intimate knowledge of your Linux system, along with the satisfaction that comes from configuring the most critical part of it yourself.
