The complete telecom briefing for entrepreneurs and managers
Today's telecommunications networks offer small businesses powerful new ways to extend their reach and maximize their profits. Now, there's a book that cuts through the jargon, helping nontechnical managers and entrepreneurs to make more intelligent, profitable decisions. Telecommunications Technologies for Small Business gives you a rock-solid foundation in telecommunications for evaluating and managing any voice, data, and Internet technologynot just today, but for years to come. Frank Panzarino covers all this, and more:
Frank Panzarino illuminates telecommunications with practical examples, extensive visuals, and expert insightand without math, jargon, or complexity. You don't need a technical background to master telecommunications: all you need is Telecommunications Technologies for Small Business.

Glossary.Surviving the rigors of small business requires knowledge in personal computing and telecommunications. Telecommunications Technologies for Small Business provides you with the basic tools to survive and prosper in a small business or home environment.
Many of today's technologies are evolving at a rapid pace. It is difficult (if not impossible) to remain current in the growth areas of high-speed broadband networking. This book guides the reader to a general understanding of how networks and devices are interconnected and what the latest trends in the industry are. Telecommunications equipment, including the personal computer, is examined for the purposes of benefiting both the home and small business user.
Telecommunications Technologies and the Structure of This BookIn Part 1 - Telecommunications Systems and Services, we start simply, by reviewing the basics of electronics theory and examining the existing telephone network: its outstanding benefits and its limitations. Analog and digital telecommunications networks are emphasized along with standard telephone network technologies. Audio and video services, including both cable and satellite transmission systems, as well as high-speed broadband Internet access are topics also introduced in this Part.
Part 2 - Telecommunications Voice and Data Terminal Equipment provides knowledge important for personal and business computing. In this Part, the equipment and services needed for a standard office installation are described. Software needed to create a home office or small business environment is also reviewed. Security considerations are an often overlooked but important part of the necessary requirements for small business installations. Unfortunately, the disaster at the World Trade Center in New York City illustrates the need for backup and recovery systems and networks. Privacy and security implications are covered in this Part. Other devices, such as answering machines, cordless telephones, and telephone features important to home or small business environments, are also reviewed here.
The last Part of this book takes a look at the new and upcoming telecommunications equipment and services. Part 3 - Telecommunications Technologies for the Future provides a view into the new technologies that will be available for the telecommunications environment of the future. Faster speeds, faster switching, and home integration are some of the topics covered in this Part. Wireless technologies will certainly be an important area of future telecommunications services. Computer interfaces for the home environment are in development at this time. Integration and convergence of existing technologies will have a profound impact on our lives in the future.
Throughout the book, I kept formulas and exhaustive analytical analysis to a minimum, to keep the book readable, informational, and at the same time enjoyable.
Cellular services are not covered in any detail, since the intention of the book is to provide a basic understanding of telecommunications technologies for small business and not for a constantly mobile business environment. Also, some high-end technologies such as ATM and SONET are not reviewed in this book since these technologies are used for telecommunications networks or large business applications and would not be encountered in a standard home or small business environment.
Telecommunications Technologies for Today's EnvironmentTelecommunications technologies and services are synonymous with change. We are accustomed to more and more information at a lower cost. We desire the latest information available anytime, anywhere in any environment.
Because of these changes in technology, human communication has also changed in a short span of time. The social, business, and economic environments are evolving with the technology, and this affects us as well. For example, email has replaced written letters; long distance voice has also replaced many forms of written communication. We can now video-conference, instant-message, and exchange pictures and music with relative ease. The integration of this technology into our society has had a profound impact on our lives. We must embrace today's technology in order to remain competitive.
Telecommunications Technologies for Classroom InstructionTelecommunications Technologies for Small Business can also be used as an introduction to today's telecommunications services and technologies for both students and business professionals. High schools, technical schools, and colleges can benefit from this book for their introductory technology and networking courses.
I have included many illustrations to emphasize topics that will benefit students. The tables and images combined with the text are a good source of information for someone with a desire to learn and study. The book begins with the basics and moves on up. A teacher or professor can emphasize certain sections of the book while deemphasizing others. For example, students can focus on multimedia audio and video transmission.
I've taught introductory telecommunications courses at several schools and received feedback from many students. Students may have knowledge in one particular area of telecommunications and networking technology but not a complete introductory knowledge of voice, video, and data. It is helpful for students to see the "Big Picture" before diving into the bits and bytes of data transfer.
This book is ideal for nonengineering or computer science majors who need to know the essentials of telecommunications technologies.
