Drupal Fundamentals LiveLessons walks you through the basics of Drupal 7 and then teaches you how to customize the powerful Drupal framework for your website's needs. The videos touch on each of the major factors of a successful content management system: functionality, content, people and permissions, work flow, and display. Through step-by-step instructions you will learn how to customize Drupal's content editing screens, create navigation systems with the module Views, refine the work flow used to publish content, and create private, member-only content areas on your site. The video lessons highlight many popular modules to extend Drupal's functionality and also teach you how to evaluate any one of the 10,000 additional modules available for Drupal.
This video series is for people who are comfortable on the Web, but new to site building in Drupal. It was specifically designed for people just learning how to build sites with Drupal, including project managers, small business owners, and designers.
The video is complemented by a support website at www.drupalfundamentals.com.
Emma Jane Hogbin has been working as a Web developer since 1996. In the final part of the lesson, you will run the installation script and complete your installation of Drupal.
Lesson 2: Storing Content examines the core content types provided by Drupal. First, it describes how to operate the different content types, the video then moves on to teach viewers how to create custom content types. The final portion of the lesson shows how to add fields to custom content types.
Lesson 3: Navigation and Static Lists of Content covers the basics in creating navigation systems so site visitors can quickly find content on your site. Viewers learn how to create custom menus as well as how to add menu items from the menu administration screen. The lesson concludes with teaching viewers how to display menu blocks on their site.
Lesson 4: Adding Functionality with Contributed Modules explains the installation of new modules for improving your site’s functionality. It shows where to find and evaluate the community contributed modules, the installation process, and then how to turn on and setup a contributed module. Using the FITS model (Find, Install, Turn on, and Setup) over the course of this lesson, the author introduces the Backup and Migrate module to make the process as smooth as possible.
Lesson 5: Creating Custom, Dynamic Lists of Content With Views covers one of Drupal’s most popular contributed models. The video illustrates how to install and configure Views and then shows the different ways to customize the sample views already in place. Viewers also learn how to create views from scratch and how to update lists of content dynamically with contextual filters. The last part focuses on using fields to refine what data is displayed in custom lists.
Lesson 6: Layout and Site Design explores the different features of design and color to personalize your Drupal site. First, the lesson teaches how to administer the layout of your site and then dives into customizing the view modes to display content in a variety of ways. Viewers also learn how to create new image styles and apply lightbox effects. The video ends with showcasing the dynamic slideshows for enhanced image display and applying new themes to your site.
Lesson 7: User Accounts covers all the basics of setting up new users on your site as well as protecting from spammers. Along with setting up different accounts, the video shows how to configure system messages for users, extend user profiles, and how to disable or delete user accounts.
Lesson 8: Restricting Access, Working with Permissions deals with the settings assigned for users, specifically highlighting the different roles for restricted access and actions for different users. These roles help manage who can post comments, what comments need to be reviewed first, and permission allowances. The lesson shows how to create roles, refine role permissions, and assign roles for different users. It concludes with tips for installing modules for private content and how to create a private discussion board.
Lesson 9: Content Work Flow oversees the publication process. It shows viewers how to set up accountability and explores the technical processes for organization growth and multiple user interaction. Along with illustrating how to manage content publishing work flow, it examines how to install and use the Diff module, administrative dashboard, Total Control, and Workbench Moderation module.
Lesson 10: Site Builder Work Flow showcases helper modules to move the development environment to a live server. This lesson focuses on using the backup module to migrate and replicate your site on another server. Viewers learn how to import content with the Feeds module and use the Features module to copy views and content types from one site to another.
