Where Do You Stand Technologically?
When the company decides to move, step back and make a true assessment of where you stand technologically. Find out what technologies are available and compare them to what you're currently using. Are you on the cutting edge of technology, or several years behind? Chances are you'll find several areas that need work. Spend the most time with those areas.
Just a year prior to my company's move, we had hired a consultant to give us an independent review of where we stood with technology. Sure, I was telling management that we had a great network, but they decided to make sure I wasn't kidding. I was proud when the consultant said that we had the second-best uptime of any accounting firm that he had visited. Even knowing that we were not too far behind the technology curve, however, there were still plenty of considerations for upgrades when the time came to move.
