What ODC Means for IT People
Like any major new technology, ODC may well absorb many jobs. But it also presents an opportunity to IT workers: moving up the value chain. A key element of ODC is that business policies will directly drive IT management. This potentially means that IT people can become more business savvy.
IT business process considerations will become very important as organizations strive to automate operational systems management. Again, this is an opportunity for IT people to extend their skills and even acquire wholly different skills.
Technology will still remain central to IT, but in a different way: ODC systems will run more tightly, with less waste. Considerations such as over-provisioning and hoping that loads don't exceed certain levels should become things of the past. It's likely that the major emphasis in IT will be on service delivery against specific requirements (SLAs).
