Where Can I Get My Content?
One of the big problems facing digital media players, or DMPs (yeah, I know, it's not as sexy as MP3, but who thought that would be?) is that it is hard to get content for them. You have to give the MP3 market credit for providing consumers with a massive amount of content. Apple's iTunes boasts well in excess of a million songs.
Currently, the best way to get the content you want on your portable device is to use a cell phone. Yes, you heard me, not a hard drive with an interface, but a cell phone. Companies such as MobiTV are delivering content, such as news from CNN and Fox, right to your cell. The quality is OK, but I have to confess that I have hard time getting used to using my phone to watch TV.
The next big step will come when Sony gets an answer to a plea it has made recently to Hollywood: Find the movie equivalent of iTunes! The next 18 months may well change the landscape for video more rapidly than the iPod has done for music. Can we say "iPod: The Movie?"
