Selecting a Fax Server
Thinking about getting a fax server? Equisys' Mayne offers these questions to help guide your selection process:
What will you use it for?
How fax-intensive is your business?
Do you have security issues?
Will you use fax as an advertising medium? Will you use it to communicate with existing customers?
How do you receive orders and send out invoices?
What are your business processes? What makes the most sense to automate?
Do you want to have the option to direct documents to distribution lists that include a mix of fax numbers and email addresses? In other words, do you want your apps to be able to "talk" to the fax server?
Brooktrout's Potocnik offers this list of things to look for that will help ensure reliability (that is, the fax going through):
Integration with third-party apps
Inbound routing (a basic feature)
What types of databases can be used in the back end?
What applications can be used to "drive" the faxing?
Just be sure, of course, that you're only sending faxes to people who have asked for them.
