Web-based maps are adding features and application interfaces for developers to further expand mapping feature sets at an incredible pace this year. Map stalwarts like MapQuest continue to provide the best driving directions online, with driving directions playing an increasingly smaller role in defining what makes a map useful. In Web-based mapping, three main players are redefining the role of the online map.

Google Maps

Google Maps was the first big mapping offering to extend beyond the concept of driving directions into the role of locating specific places and services on the map. Of course, it also includes driving directions, which seem to be an afterthought. Like Virtual Earth (mentioned below), Google Maps will pinpoint businesses on the map based on search criteria. Results vary greatly in doing business searches with Google Maps. In several tests, I searched for specific businesses in Seattle and got a wide area of similar to completely irrelevant results. Google Maps offers both the traditional graphical map and satellite imagery.

The one area where Google is beating all other mapping services is extensibility. Google provides some easily customizable tools for overlaying Google Maps with all kinds of data, like traffic reports, Craigslist home listings and political party contributions. This effectively makes Google Maps a living visual data mine down to the street level of detail.

Virtual Earth

Microsoft announced Virtual Earth earlier this year as an enhancement to MSN Maps. The key feature of Virtual Earth is an overlay of satellite photos for an aerial view of mapping data, unlike the comic-colored images typically scene representing roads and natural landmarks. To define Virtual Earth as a map with satellite images sells it short. A bunch of new features make this one of the most useful mapping apps online. A scratch pad keeps track of the locations you search for, making it easy to build a route for multiple destinations or compare distances between your home base and alternative destinations. You can save maps by emailing a link to someone else, to yourself or by blogging the map in MSN Spaces right from Virtual Earth. A Locate Me feature finds your current location based either on IP address or an ActiveX control installed on your system. If you haven't cleared your Internet cache, Virtual Earth keeps the scratch pad from your last visit to the site intact so you don't need to re-type everything.

Another useful feature of Virtual Earth is a reasonably accurate business finder. If I want to find a hardware store in Seattle, I do a search and get results for hardware stores. If I'm looking for restaurants near a destination, I can find them by turning on a feature to show me nearby business without knowing specific business names. A developer API makes some of the Virtual Earth feature set available to developers.

A9 Maps

The defining feature of A9 maps is photographs. Like many other services, A9 pulls up information about specific locations and provides driving directions to and from your destination. With your mapping search, A9 includes street level photographs of the building fronts near your destination. Instead of reading the placard on the door when you arrive at the corner of Alaska and Jackson in Seattle, you can see the building before you get there, giving you a great visual of the neighborhood prior to arrival.

Application and System Logs

Pearson automatically collects log data to help ensure the delivery, availability and security of this site. Web Analytics

Pearson may use third party web trend analytical services, including Google Analytics, to collect visitor information, such as IP addresses, browser types, referring pages, pages visited and time spent on a particular site.
