Once you create the movies for your video blog, you need a place to store them. If you currently have a Web site with file hosting capabilities, make sure you have plenty of drive space available, because video takes a massive amount of space. If you don't have a Web server, you need a service with plenty of available space. Rocketboom, a daily video blog, averages about 4 minutes of MOV format video at roughly 16MB per episode.
The Internet Archive is both the storage facility for all audio and video for OurMedia.org (described below) and a standalone location for hosting content. When you outgrow the space available to you via your blog or when you become popular enough that your server can't handle the traffic, the Internet Archive provides unlimited storage capacity and bandwidth for free. There's an approximately 24 hour waiting period for newly published content to Internet Archive, because they verify the files for copyright violation and some other criteria, which in this case is the price of free. After the files are uploaded, you link to them from you blog entry just like you would any other file.
Neptune isn't officially part of the video blogging space, but does a great job of hosting video blog content. They offer video hosting accounts for $59 per year which provides a fixed amount of space to upload 320x240 resolution movies. The easiest way to access Neptune's service is through the free Windows Movie Maker, which includes a Web upload wizard with direct access to a Neptune account. Create a movie, edit in Windows Movie Maker and upload the finished movie to Neptune, which automatically adds the movie to your personalized Neptune page. The downside to this service is lack of compatibility with browsers other than Internet Explorer. If your audience consists of people who use OS X or Linux, consider using an alternative service. Neptune lacks any RSS component, so people can't subscribe to your videos and get them delivered automatically.
OurMedia.org launched at the beginning of 2005 as a place to publish audio and video without worry about cost or space limitations. The storage backbone of OurMedia.org is the Internet Archive, requiring you to create an account in both places. The two services are then linked in a somewhat complicated fashion that gets easier after you upload your first production. OurMedia.org is getting their turnaround time for making video content live down to a matter of hours from the 24 hour turnaround traditionally associated with Internet Archive. In addition to making posts, creating an RSS feed for the posts and allowing people to post text comments, OurMedia.org also has a social networking component allowing you to identify other OurMedia members as friends.
VidBlogs.com provides no video file hosting but is an aggregator of video blogs, providing a common location for people who video blog to post and link to their video files. Instead of hoping someone will happen on your totally cool video blog, people who visit VidBlogs.com will find you among the group of bloggers who all link to their videos from this common location.
