Blogging services come in a variety of flavors. Some offer very simple image plus caption posting, others provide meta-tagging solutions for associating a photo with a particular topic. All the services have key elements in common, including tools to add photos to the service, a method for displaying the photos and a specific convention for linking to your photo blog from the service. Many of the services also provide an RSS feed for each account (and occasionally for specific tags) keeping viewers notified with each new picture added.
It's tempting to leave the list of photo blogging tools to only one, with Flickr being that one. Flickr supports image posting either by upload from a computer or via camera phone. Your Flickr account is assigned a unique page where all access to your photos originates. Privacy settings determine who can view images and who may comment on them. A commenting system provides access for viewers to leave comments. Photosets group images in online albums for convenient organization of related images. What really makes Flickr unique is a feature for leaving notes about specific sections of a photo, allowing you to identify individuals or objects in a picture. Tagging associates keywords with images which makes it easier for someone searching Flickr to find your photo and any other photo on Flickr tagged with the same keyword. It's the combination of notes and tags available in Flickr that make it unlike any other photo blogging solution. The free version of Flickr is limited to 20MB of photos per month in a maximum of 3 photosets. Archiving of images is at a lower resolution than the subscription version of Flickr. For $24.95 annually, Flickr Pro offers 2GB of image uploads monthly with unlimited storage of images at their original resolution. Subscribing to Flickr also eliminates ads from pages when logged in to your account.
While the name implies anything but photos, TextAmerica is all about images, both still and moving. The service is geared primarily toward people who want to send snaps from their camera phone, but also includes a feature for uploading movies from phones as well. Support for uploading images directly from a PC is also available. TextAmerica supports keyword tagging, viewer comments and includes a rating system for site wide rating of images by all members. Free accounts are ad supported, with a premium service available to eliminate ads and include some customization of the page. Blog syndication allows account holders to display images on their own blog or by directing people to the account page on TextAmerica.
Buzznet offers photo uploading via either camera phone or PC. Photos are organized in galleries. An email feature lets you notify friends when you post a photo to Buzznet. Photo slideshows give the user control over image display. Commenting on photos by other Buzznet members is supported. Keyword tagging is available through what the service refers to as Buzzwords. A privacy feature provides a level of access control over which photos may be viewed publicly. By syndicating a Buzznet account to your blog, you can display images in connection with text postings. Premium accounts with no ads are available but require signing up for a free account first.
MoblogUK is a photo blogging service that truly is free. The site doesn't display advertising and doesn't offer a limited version of the service free with an upgrade path to something else. Images are added by sending them from a camera phone or by an email client. Commenting on posts is fully supported. Keyword tagging is currently not supported, preventing a site wide search for images with related tags. Image posts may include text, but typically include a title and image only. Unlike services like Flickr and Buzznet, nudity of any kind is strictly forbidden on MoblogUK, which makes it the most family friendly of the services available.
