Several devices offer both video recording and playback. The video recording option is interesting because it allows the user to connect a television signal and record for later playback either on a television screen via RCA outputs or onscreen viewing on the device. It's like having a Tivo you can put in your pocket. The Archos AV400 is probably the best known model in this category of devices, recording up to 704x480 video in MPEG-4 as DivX AVI files. The recorded video is very close to the 720x480 DVD quality, which is perfect for output to a television screen while maintaining portability. Software for scheduling television recording is built in to devices in this category, making it possible to record television without needing to be around when the show starts.
