Video editing software comes in two basic flavors: consumer and professional. At the heart of any software editing tool is a core set of features required to get a movie from the DV camera and out to whatever the distribution format you choose might be. The level of control between start and finish is what sets various software editing solutions apart. To effectively create professional-looking movies, the following tools are essential in any video editing solution:

DV import capability. Every video editing application offers the ability to import content from a digital video camera. The physical transfer generally happens using a FireWire (i.Link for Sony owners) connection between the camera and the PC. The software capture often controls the play, stop, and rewind/fast forward functions of the DV cam, providing excellent control over which part of the tape gets imported.
Analog video import. If you own older media types, like Hi8, VHS, VHS-C, or Betamax, having the ability to import those formats is useful too. Analog connections general require special hardware designed to interface with the analog device and convert the audio and video to digital formats usable by the video editing software.
A minimum of 1 video and 2 audio edit tracks on a timeline. The video track is where the raw video footage resides while it's being edited. Two audio tracks are necessary to access the audio from the DV tape and to layer additional audio from narrations or soundtrack music.
Editing features. At the most basic level, movie-editing tools require the ability to cut video and rearrange the pieces in a non-linear fashion. In order to maximize the viewing experience, eliminating unwanted footage is a must.
Transitions. Transitions aren't truly required to make a movie, but they add a level of professionalism when used correctly. Crossfading, where the current scene is gradually replaced by the upcoming scene, is among the most useful transitions. Consumer video software often provides hundreds of transitions, providing star wipes and other outrageous transitions, which bloat the size of the final movie and often add an amateur quality to the story.
Titles. Titling is one of the most useful aspects of video editing software, especially for home movies. Using titles, it's easy to keep track of when on-camera events took place and set the stage for why a recording was made, without needing to add a visual back-story to support onscreen events.
Output. Rendering a composite movie from all the edits, transitions, and title additions to the raw video and output the final movie to a format ready for burning to DVD, sending via email, or sharing on the Internet is the important final piece in a basic home movie package. This is the step where your all the hard work of shooting the video and choosing what to keep becomes the movie everyone will see.
