The Small Footprint!
Although Palm, Symbian, and Microsoft CE are clear leaders in the mobile development platform, there are other players competing for the space. Zucotto Wireless (http://www.zucotto.com/) is a U.S.-based wireless platform provider whose biggest strength is support for Java as an application platform for development. The only weakness Zucotto seems to have is that it has its own specialized processor XPRESSOcore.
Two other important platform technology vendors include RIM (Research in Motion) and Openwave. Openwave has one of the largest installed bases as a vendor in the wireless arena. Its offerings include location suites, messaging suites, mobile services platforms, device products, and developer tools. It is a fairly strong player when it comes to building MMS-based applications. It clearly lacks PDA experience, however.
Research in Motion is another hardware vendor that supports Sun Microsystems "J2ME" development environment. Its devices are popular in B2C and B2E type of environments, particularly the Blackberry devices, but it lacks support from other vendors and application developers.
