InformIT Articles and Sample Chapters
For another perspective on Ruby on Rails, check out Molly Holzschlag's view of Ruby on Rails, from the Web Design Reference Guide.
The Ruby Programming Language, by Yukihiro Matsumoto, the Ruby language's creator, explains his design philosophy and how Ruby compares to Perl and Python.
Pete McBreen has put together a series of articles about becoming a software developer using Ruby as his sample language. Ruby figures particularly strongly into Ruby for the Nuby, which provides a basic introduction to programming itself, Test Driven Development with Ruby, and Ruby for the Internet Nuby, which demonstrates an application that sends emails.
Manipulating Structured Data in Ruby by Hal Fulton, a sample chapter from The Ruby Way (Sams, 2001, ISBN: 0672320835) looks at arrays, hashes, and more complex data structures. It also gives you some ideas for storing data creatively, ways to make use of various data structures, and creating iterators for these classes.
Containers in Ruby by Mark Slagell explains how you can contain your objects as strings, arrays, hashes, and ranges using containers.
Books and eBooks
The Ruby Way, by Hal Fulton (Sams, 2001, ISBN: 0-672-32083-5) explains not just the Ruby language, but also the design philosophy behind it and the ways in which you can build your own applications to mesh with the way the language itself has been conceived and built. (Read online)
Programming Ruby: The Pragmatic Programmer's Guide by David Thomas and Andrew Hunt (Addison Wesley Professional, 2000, ISBN: 0201710897) is an excellent introduction to the language, taking you from knowing nothing about it to being comfortable enough to build virtually any type of application.
Test-Driven Development: A Practical Guide by David Astels (Prentice Hall, 2003 ISBN: 0-13-101649-0) isn't about Ruby per se, but provides insight into using Ruby in a Test Driven Development environment. It explains refactoring, mock objects, and "programming by intention", and includes a TDD framework for Ruby. (Read online)
Downloads and Documentation
Downloads and documentation for Ruby on Rails can be broken down into several types of resources: the main software, associated tools, and additional software and information.
First, the "official" Ruby site is your first option for downloading Ruby, but you can also get it as part of some Rails downloads. In particular, if you're using Windows, you can download Instant Rails, which includes both Ruby and Rails. Otherwise, you can download Rails separately.
As far as "official" documentation goes, the Ruby documentation includes the Core API and the standard libraries. You can also find the Ruby on Rails API documentation online.
If you prefer to use an Integrated Development Environment such as Eclipse for your development, you can download the Ruby Development Tool or Radrails, which has the RDT built into it.
If you're wondering what Ruby is good for, one example to check out is Web Application Testing In Ruby (WATIR) (pronouced "water"), which uses Internet Explorer to check web applications. Besides serving as an example of what you can do with Ruby, it can also check your Rails applications for errors.
