Articles and Sample Chapters
"REST: Another Way of Looking at Web Services" by David Chappell, gives you an overview of what REST is and why it can be useful. It also looks at REST's prospects in a pro-SOAP world.
"Using the SOAP Protocol with Java, by Glen Daniels, Peter Brittenham, Doug Davis, Paul Fremantle, Steve Graham, Dieter Koenig, Yuichi Nakamura, Simeon Simeonov and Claudia Zentner, from their book Building Web Services with Java: Making Sense of XML, SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI, 2nd Edition (Sams, 2004, ISBN 0672326418) is actually about SOAP, but it includes a section that explains how SOAP 1.2 has been enhanced to enable REST-like interactions, in direct response to REST's continuing popularity and usefulness among programmers.
Books and eBooks
Enterprise J2ME: Developing Mobile Java Applications, by Michael Juntao Yuan (Prentice Hall PTR, 2003, ISBN 0-13-140530-6) provides an example of using Java to access REST data, this time in the J2ME environment. (Read this book on Safari)
Google Hacks, by Tara Calishain and Rael Dornfest (O'Reilly, 2003, ISBN 0-596-00447-8) includes a section on accessing the Google Web Service using REST (through a wrapper called XooMLe). It's interesting in that it shows the various pieces of using REST, including method names and parameters. (Read this book on Safari)
Programming Web Services with Perl, by Pavel Kulchenko and Randy J. Ray (O'Reilly, 2002, ISBN 0-596-00206-8) includes not only a look at programming REST using Perl, but an entire chapter on the subject that also includes a good look at the theory behind it, including modeling resources and various HTTP methods. (Read this book on Safari)
Office 2003 XML, by Evan Lenz, Mary McRae and Simon St. Laurent (O'Reilly, 2004, ISBN 0-596-00538-5) explains how to initiate a REST request and analyze the results, dropping them into an Excel spreadsheet, using Visual Basic for Applications. (Read this book on Safari)
Documentation and Implementation
The original idea for REpresentational State Transfer (REST) comes from Roy Fielding's Ph.D. dissertation. From there it was picked up by a number of enthusiasts, and today a good place to go for information is the REST Wiki (now at it's new home).
As far as implementations go, there are plenty. In fact, you're essentially using one now; it's called a web browser. Digging deeper, however, you can see the resutls of implementing REST on the server side by looking at Amazon Web Services or Bloglines Web Services or TypePad or any number of other services that have made themselves available this way.
On the programming end, check out client implementations in Perl, PHP, or virtually any RSS implementation.
Finally, check out XooMLe. This is an application that takes the SOAP-based Google web API and wraps it into a REST implementation. It's written in PHP and is released under a Creative Commons license, so you can tear it apart and really see how it works.
