▪ The “You” Rule ▪

“You” can exert its innate power all the way from the high-stakes of an IPO roadshow to mundane email. I apply the “You” rule to everything I write: books, articles, blogs, and even emails and texts. Before dispatching any written communication, I make one final review to see where I can insert additional instances of “you.”

For example, if I meet someone at a business function, I might write a follow-up email as follows:

  • It was great to meet at the conference. I look forward to working together in the future.

With the “You” rule applied, it would read:

  • It was great meeting you at the conference. I look forward to working with you in the future.

Try the “You” rule yourself. It will personalize the tone and heighten the impact of any presentation, blog, memo, report, document, or email you write.

In this chapter alone, “you” and its variations appear more than 70 times.
