Wireless Appliances
Although there certainly are lots of examples of such things already around—including GPS devices and LoJack anti-theft devices in vehicles, tracking sensors for all kinds of field biology uses, and so forth—most technology experts believe that we're poised for a positive explosion in this wireless category. Basically, the idea is that special-purpose devices may either be integrated with existing products (as in the motor vehicle examples already mentioned) or may become consumer products in their own right.
All in all, such devices could not only advertise their locations and identify their users (valuable enough characteristics for all kinds of shopping, travel, and hobby applications) but they could also become far more self-maintaining using wireless links to download software updates, new data or databases, as well as news and promotional information related to their specific capabilities. Thus, the overall consensus on this emerging category of wireless technologies is "you ain't seen nothing yet."
