Q&A
I've just upgraded all of our workstations from Windows 98 to Windows 2000. Now, one of my Windows applications isn't working anymore, even though it used to run under Windows 98. What could be wrong?
A couple of things are somewhat different between Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Consider the following potential changes: different filesystem, NTFS (NT File System) version 5, versus FAT (File Allocation Table) or FAT32 on Win98; totally different video drivers; different DOS subsystem. Here's the question: Is the new operating system the only thing that's different? If so (you haven't upgraded your hardware as well), the problem is likely OS related. Try rolling back one of the workstations and seeing if the app starts working again.
Someone in my organization keeps changing things but never admits to it, particularly when things break. What can I do?
Unless you're this person's boss, you can't do much. However, this person's boss probably sees that he contributes chaos and fear to your organization. This isn't a technical problem, it's a social one, and is best handled as such.
