Managing Your Screen Time
One of the more interesting and useful new features in iOS 12 is Screen Time , which lets you view and manage the amount of time you spend using your iPad. Screen Time can help you or anyone else using your iPad to spend less time with your eyes on the screen and more time interacting with real people in the real world.
View Your Screen Time
Perhaps the most useful feature of Screen Time is the ability to see how much time you’ve spent using your iPad—and on what activities.
From the Settings screen, tap Screen Time in the left column to select the Screen Time tab.
The top panel on the Screen Time tab shows how long you’ve been using your device for the current session, as well as your current activity.
Tap the name of your device to view more information.
The Screen Time panel displays more detailed information about how you’ve used your iPad today.
The Most Used panel displays information about your most used apps and websites. Tap an app to view more information about that item.
By default, the Most Used panel displays information about apps and websites. Tap Show Categories to show this information grouped by type of activity.
The Pickups panel displays how many times you’ve picked up your iPad and when. It also shows during what time spanned you’ve picked up your iPad the most.
The Notifications panel displays how many notifications you’ve received, when, and of what type.
Configure Downtime
If you think you’re using your iPad too much, use Screen Time to schedule regular downtime when you won’t be allowed to use your device—except for those apps you select to be available. For example, you may want to still send and receive message during your downtime.
From the Screen Time tab, tap Downtime.
Tap “on” the Downtime switch to enable the downtime feature. (Tap “off” this switch if you don’t want any iPad downtime.)
Tap Start and enter the time you want your downtime to start.
Tap End and enter the time you want your device to be available again.
Tap Screen Time to return to the Screen Time tab.
Tap Always Allowed.
Apps allowed during downtime are displayed in the Allowed Apps panel. Tap an app and then tap Remove to remove it from the allowed list.
To add another app to the allowed list, tap it in the Choose Apps panel.
Set App Limits
The Screen Time app also enables you to set time limits for specific apps. Once you set a limit, you will only be able to use that type of app for that specific amount of time each day.
From the Screen Time tab, tap App Limits.
Any app limits you’ve previously set are displayed here. Tap a limit to edit or delete that limit.
Tap Add Limit to add a new app limit.
Tap the category you want to limit.
Tap Add.
Set the amount of time you want to use that type of app during a 24-hour period.
Tap Delete Limit to remove this time limit.
Block Specific Content
You can also use Screen Time to block any content you want—including inappropriate content.
From the Screen Time tab, tap Content & Privacy Restrictions.
Tap “on” the Content & Privacy Restrictions switch.
By default, everything is allowed. To block specific content, tap that item.
Tap Don’t Allow Changes (or Don’t Allow or just “off”) for the specific item you want to block.
