New Techs On the Block
Advanced Radio Cells, Inc., while not exactly a household name, has been in business since 1999 and received FCC certification to market its wireless system in March 2002. Although new to the marketplace, it believes that its AR1255 hub transceiver and AR3155 subscriber unit operating in the 5.3GHz and 5.8GHz U-NII (Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure) spectrum is cutting-edge technology. In a word, company employees feel that they've built better mouse ears... rather, antennas.
While engineers at Advanced Radio Cells handle the RF side, their counterparts at Vyyo, Inc. have developed modifications to the DOCSIS platformthe cable modem. In essence, their collaboration has created "an integrated subscriber transceiver/antenna with a modem and an integrated hub transceiver/antenna with a WMTS (Wireless Modem Termination System)."
According to a statement prepared by Advanced Radio Cells, "While DOCSIS faces challenges in [wireless] environments, specifically, the effects of various types of interference and RF effects, such as multipath, Fresnel effect, Rayleigh fade, and others. With modifications and advancements, DOCSIS has been successfully adapted by Advanced Radio Cells, Inc. (ARCi) and Vyyo, Inc. for use on wireless systems, and includes features such as extended frequency tolerance, more signal path equalization, increase in dynamic range, and support for multiple modulation types and modulation symbol rates. These enhancements improve, among other things, the signal-to-noise margin for robust performance under the less-than-ideal conditions of broadband wireless operation." System performance metrics resulting from these innovations include full duplex transmission with rates of 10 to 20 megabits downstream and 5 upstream. Referring to its product line as a "carrier class system" James Wong, Vice President of Marketing states, "We have a higher performancedata rate, throughput, and capacity by comparison. As well, we can accommodate 10,000 subscribers, much more than other brands. "
The company has placed systems in rural communities located in Texas, Kansas, Wyoming, and San Jose; and overseas.
